About Jackie

  1. How I became a Make-Up Artist…

When I left school in Yorkshire, I really wanted to be a make-up artist but there were no courses except at the BBC and it was impossible to get a place there without connections. My careers officer at school suggested I become a PE teacher as I was “good at netball”! Ignoring her advice, I moved to London to study Beauty Therapy and whenever I met a photographer I would pester to work with them for free in order to build up a portfolio of my work.

  2. My very first celebrity client was…

A notorious rockabilly band, King Kurt, who wanted a shot of their singer on the cross like Jesus for an Easter gig. The photographer set up a cross in the Barbican and I had fun creating wounds until an offended Christian called the police – we were sent packing and they confiscated the film – all totally rock ‘n’ roll!

  3. The celebrities I work with…

Past and present clients include: Sienna Miller, Bat For Lashes, Katy Perry, Lily Allen, Yasmin Le Bon, Rilo Kiley, Yoko Ono, Avril Lavigne, The Dolly Rockers, Claire Richards, Kelli Young, Jessica Taylor, Daniel Craig, Kasabian, Jon Bon Jovi, Snow Patrol, Pet Shop Boys, Brandon Flowers, Coldplay, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Miike Snow. I’m also the Chief Make-Up Artist for Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor live shows.

  4. I always wanted to work with…

Michael Jackson, but sadly that won’t happen.

  5. My biggest make-up challenge to date is…

Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent.

  6. My most memorable shoot was…

A fantastic Mixmag cover shoot at a beautiful hotel in Portugal, where we spent five days in the sun and managed to sneak in a little downtime! It was one of those shoots where the stylist, photographer, assistants and models were all great fun and I think the photographs reflected that.

  7. A day-in-life-of Jackie Tyson is…

Never the same! That’s the joy of my job.

  8. I gain inspiration from…

    Everywhere…film, fashion, music, the streets.

  9. The make-up industry…

Changes all the time. There’s always new textures, colours and formulations to discover. I love trying out new products and new ways of using them, I have recently learnt to airbrush which I had fun getting to grips with on a recent shoot with Miike Snow.

  10. My new favourite make-up item is…

Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil. I change my make-up bag nearly every day but will always have a concealer, a lip colour, a blusher and an eye pencil for touch ups. I love to change my look according to what I’m wearing.

  11. One key product to carry everyday is…

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream – a great multi-tasker.

  12. The look I’m most asked to create is…

    The Smokey Eye Look.

  13. To keep up to date with the latest trends and styles…

I love to work on fashion shows in London, then you know what the looks are for the year ahead and can temper them to “real” people and celebrities.

  14. The look I’m most proud of in my career…

It is so hard to choose, but I’d have to say from the start of my career when I worked with the legendary Leigh Bowery and Royal Ballet star Michael Clark as the sole make-up artist in an amazing dance film called Because We Must, to more recently working with Natasha Khan (AKA Bat For Lashes) as she is so brave and imaginative with her looks.

  15. The Jackie Tyson Make-Up School…

Will hopefully inspire many new make-up artists. I am so thrilled to have a make-up school which enables me to offer exactly the course I wanted to do when I left school which wasn’t available.
